POKOTABI / Massan
まっさん
Counter izakaya Massan in Katsura, Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto, welcomes guests with draft beer and a 3-dish appetizer spread, followed by kushikatsu served 1 at a time, comforting obanzai, and occasional nigiri sushi from the owner-chef.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A short stroll from Katsura Station, Massan is a cozy izakaya where a friendly owner-chef greets diners from across the counter. Taking a seat and ordering a medium mug of Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer brings out an attentive 3-dish otoshi appetizer set. Generous enough to sip alongside right away, these satisfying small bites make for an inviting start to the evening.
Those craving crisp fried food will find much to like in the kushikatsu assortment. Rather than arriving all at once, the deep-fried skewers are handed over the counter fresh from the oil 1 at a time, ensuring every bite stays piping hot. Countertop bowls display gently seasoned obanzai, complemented by an array of seasonal and seafood dishes such as simmered fish, sashimi, and bamboo shoot tempura. Once a week, the owner also rolls up his sleeves to make nigiri sushi, drawing regulars who gather to pair the fresh nigiri with sake.
While the establishment was originally known as a standing bar, seating is now available so visitors can settle in comfortably. Its evening hours make it an easy stop for a relaxed solo visit. Note that payment is cash only.
